Dementia is a term used to describe a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking, and social abilities severely enough to interfere with daily life. It is not a normal part of aging, though it is more common in older adults.
There are many types of dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common. Others include vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia. Symptoms can vary but often include memory loss, confusion, personality changes, and difficulty communicating.
Early diagnosis can improve quality of life and help individuals and families plan ahead. At Horizon Elder Care, we use a compassionate approach modeled after Naomi Feil’s Validation Method to support older adults experiencing cognitive decline with dignity and respect.
